Why does the motor run without lifting the door?
A broken torsion spring, most often, and cold snaps are when many of them go. A door frozen to the floor gives the same symptom, so check the bottom seal first. Then pull the emergency release and lift by hand. A sound door rises smoothly and stays put. If it won't budge and the coil above shows a gap, stop pressing the button and book a repair.
Do I need an electrician to install an opener?
Not if there's already an outlet on the ceiling, since most home openers plug in. Adding an outlet or a circuit is electrical work. In Ontario, you may do it in your own home after filing a notification with the Electrical Safety Authority. Anyone you pay for the job must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification and has ESA review the work.
How do I check the door will not close on someone?
