Overview: Lawn Care Services
A lawn crew cuts, trims, feeds and fights weeds, grubs and thatch. In Canada the growing season is short, so the spring cleanup and the fall feed matter more than the mowing in between. Snow mould shows up as matted grey patches after the melt, and the strip along the driveway takes road salt every winter.
What goes on the grass is set by the province, and often by your city. Ontario bans cosmetic pesticides such as glyphosate on lawns, and the rule is the same for licensed exterminators as for homeowners. Nova Scotia limits lawn pesticides to a list of lower-risk products. Quebec bans its highest-risk pesticides on lawns, and a company there can't spread a pesticide mixed with fertilizer.
Water can be regulated too. Metro Vancouver limits lawn watering to set mornings through the dry months, and a stricter stage can stop it altogether. A new lawn there needs a municipal permit to be watered outside those times. Ask any crew what its seeding plan assumes about water, because seed that dries out is money left on the boulevard.
Our listings show what each company states on its own website, its hours and lines from public reviews. Pick your province, then your city page, which sorts local crews from the ones driving in.
Frequently asked questions
How short should the grass be cut?
Taller than most people cut it, and taller still in a dry spell. Take the first spring cut a little lower to lift grass matted by snow, then raise the deck and leave it there. The last cut of the fall can come down a notch so long blades don't mat under the snow. Never scalp it, because thin turf lets weeds in before the short season gives it time to recover.
What is in a lawn treatment plan?
A spring feed, weed control within your province's rules, and a fall feed before the ground freezes. In Ontario that weed control has to come from the allowable list, which means products like corn gluten meal or soap. In Quebec, the crew can't use a weed and feed mix. Ask what each visit puts down and whether a return visit for weeds costs extra.
How often should I water the lawn?
Deeply and rarely, and within your city's rules. A long soak trains roots to grow down, while a daily sprinkle keeps them at the surface. Metro Vancouver restricts lawn watering to set mornings for months at a time, and a drought stage can ban it outright. A lawn that browns in August is usually dormant rather than dead, and it greens up again once the fall rain arrives.
Does my lawn need aeration and overseeding?
If the soil is packed hard, the grass thins along paths, or water pools after rain, yes. Core aeration pulls out plugs so air and water reach the roots. Spread seed right after, while the holes are open. Late summer is the usual window, so the new grass roots before frost. In Metro Vancouver, a newly seeded lawn needs a municipal permit to be watered outside the restricted times.
Who is allowed to apply weed killer?
It depends on the province. In Ontario, anyone applying pesticides for hire on property they don't own usually needs an exterminator licence, and the business needs an operator licence. In Quebec, the company needs a green-space permit, and its applicators need a certificate or a certified supervisor. Most BC businesses that use pesticides must employ certified people, and many BC municipalities restrict lawn pesticides further.
