Automobile Door Freeze-ups You could: 1. Use an aerosol de-icer or warm WD-40 (let it sit for 30 seconds before trying the lock again). 2. Try a de-icer with a heating element (battery operated as part of your keychain). 3. Warm your key gently with a flame. You may have to re-heat several times before the lock starts turning. Be gentle on the key, you don't want to break it. Don't burn your fingers touching the heated end. 4. Use your warm breath to blow into the lock cylinder (don't get your lips stuck!). 5. Stuck at home, defrost the lock with a hairdryer (don't heat too much as the paint could wrinkle or burn). ** Whatever you do, do not use boiling water! It might flash freeze. Sometimes it's not the lock but the door itself that doesn't open. This usually means that water has frozen up against the rubber seal that surrounds the door frame. This will require heated air, de-icer fluid, or heated WD-40 to break it up enough to get the door open. Just pray or heat around the seam of the door.
