Pool season here is short, so opening and closing carry most of the risk. A proper closing drops the water below the skimmer, blows the lines clear, plugs the returns, drains the pump and filter, and puts a cover on. A tarp held down with water bags isn't an anchored safety cover, and spring tends to prove it.
In between, a route tech tests and doses the water, brushes the walls, empties the baskets and reads the filter pressure. Some companies sell a chemical-only route where you handle the physical work. Others take care of all of it.
The chemistry is simpler than it sounds. Sanitizer kills what grows. pH decides whether that sanitizer works and whether the finish etches or scales. Alkalinity keeps pH from swinging. Health Canada regulates the sanitizers themselves, so the label on a real product names the Pest Control Products Act.

Frequently asked questions
Where can the water go when a pool is drained?
In Toronto, it depends on the pool. Chlorinated water can go to the storm sewer once it's been dechlorinated, but not on a rainy day. It can also soak into your own lawn, as long as none runs onto a neighbour's property. Salt water carries too many chlorides for the storm sewer, so it goes to the sanitary connection on your lot or into your ground. The sewer by-law binds your pool company as well as you.
Is a salt pool free of chlorine?
No. The cell turns dissolved salt into chlorine, so the water stays chlorinated all season. Health Canada requires salt chlorine generators to be registered, just as it regulates the chlorine itself. What you skip is hauling pails home. Cells scale up and eventually need replacing, and the salt level drops after a spring refill or a wet stretch, so it needs topping up.
How can I tell a pool chemical is approved in Canada?
Check the label. Pool and spa sanitizers sold here must be registered or scheduled under the Pest Control Products Act, and a registered product shows its registration number for that Act. Health Canada's pesticide label search lets you look a product up. Keep chemicals in their original containers somewhere cool, dry and ventilated. Never mix products together.
Full service or a chemical route?
A chemical route costs less and works if you'll brush, net and empty the baskets yourself between visits. A full route suits a pool under maples, a cottage you only reach on weekends, or a household that won't keep up. Ask how many visits the price covers, what counts as extra, and whether opening and closing are part of the deal or booked separately.
When should a pool be opened and closed?
Open earlier than feels necessary, since water warming under a cover with no sanitizer turns green fast. Close once the water stays cold but before a hard frost can split lines or equipment. Both windows book up early. A gas heater that needs more than a switch-off belongs to a gas technician, and in Ontario that means a contractor registered with TSSA.
