Overview: Tile & Stone Installation
Stone and tile get chosen in person. Slab yards stand granite, marble and quartz upright in racks, and tile showrooms lay out full boards, because a small chip can't show how the pattern moves. The slab you tag is the one the shop cuts. Ask for a layout drawing that shows where the seams and the sink cutout land before anyone starts a saw.
Canadian weather narrows the choices outside. A front step, a walkway or a pool deck goes through freeze and thaw all winter, so the tile or stone needs an exterior rating for freezing climates and a base that drains. Water trapped under a tile freezes, lifts it and breaks the grout. Rock salt speeds the damage on softer stone.
Inside, heated floors under tile are a popular choice for bathrooms and basements. In Ontario, the tile setter may lay the heating mat, but a notification has to be filed with the Electrical Safety Authority and the mat inspected before it's covered. If you hire out the wiring from the panel, it goes to a licensed electrical contractor. In Quebec, contractors setting ceramic, marble or stone generally need a licence from the Régie du bâtiment.
Our listings show what each yard, showroom or installer states on its own website. Go to your province, then your city, to find places you can visit and crews who set the material.
What stone and tile work costs in Canada
Separate tile-setting labour from supplied materials, and distinguish tiled surfaces from fabricated slab countertops.
| Service | Planning budget | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Floor and backsplash tile | ||
| Porcelain floor tile, labour only | C$8–C$21per sq ft of tiled area | Standard porcelain floor tile in a straight layout on a prepared substrate; small-job minimums may apply.Tile supplied separately. The floor must already be suitable; demolition, levelling, membranes and special setting materials are extra. What this estimate coversIncludes in this budget: Laying, ordinary cuts and grouting labour Budget separately or confirm: Tile supply, demolition, levelling and waterproofing; Special mortar or membrane systems unless itemized |
| Natural stone tile installation, tile extra | C$15–C$35per sq ft of tiled area | Natural stone tile in a straightforward layout on a suitable prepared floor.Stone supplied separately. Confirm mortar, grout and sealing in the quote; levelling, waterproofing and specialist substrate systems are extra. What this estimate coversIncludes in this budget: Stone-laying and grouting labour Budget separately or confirm: Stone supply, levelling, sealing and specialist substrate systems |
| Tile backsplash installation labour | C$450–C$1,600per illustrative 30 sq ft backsplash | Installation labour for a 30 sq ft tile backsplash on a prepared wall, with an ordinary agreed layout and outlet cuts.Calculated labour example; tile and setting materials are separate. Project minimums apply, so a smaller area may not cost proportionately less. What this estimate coversIncludes in this budget: Tile-setting and grouting labour for the agreed layout Budget separately or confirm: Tile, grout and setting materials; Demolition, wall repairs, electrical changes and unlisted specialist cuts |
| Substrate preparation | Scope-based quoteper defined preparation scope | Leveling, board replacement or waterproofing specified separately.finish tile installation; unassessed structural work Ask for separate quantities and prices for levelling, underlayment and waterproofing. Surface defects and wet-area requirements change the preparation scope. Add this only when it is needed and is not already included in the agreed package. What this estimate coversIncludes in this budget: Agreed preparation materials and labour Budget separately or confirm: Finish tile installation; Unassessed structural work |
| Fabricated countertop | ||
| Quartz countertop, supplied and installed | C$60–C$130per sq ft installed | Standard quartz kitchen countertop with a basic edge and one sink/faucet cutout; small pieces may have minimum charges.Quartz, fabrication and installation included. Minimum job area, old-top removal, plumbing reconnection and extra cutouts must be confirmed. What this estimate coversIncludes in this budget: Quartz, template/fabrication, installation and specified basic cutouts Budget separately or confirm: Old countertop removal, plumbing reconnection and new sink/faucet; Waterfall panels, premium edging and extra cutouts |
What changes the price
- Tile or slab material, size, pattern and fabrication waste
- Substrate flatness, movement, waterproofing and reinforcement
- Cutouts, edges, access, demolition and disposal
Ask before accepting a quote
- Is the rate labour-only or does it include the actual tile or slab selection?
- Which preparation, waterproofing and substrate repairs are included?
- How are cutouts, edges, waste material and slab minimums priced?
Match the measured surface
- Compare tile labour, tile supply and preparation as separate components
- Countertop fabrication includes different work from laying floor tiles and needs its own estimate
Canadian context
For exterior stone or tile, ask for materials and an installation assembly suited to the local exposure and freeze-thaw conditions.
Planning amounts in Canadian dollars. Published tax treatment varies; confirm applicable taxes and the final total in your written quote. Rows can be different services, alternative packages or separately priced extras. Add only work that is needed and not already included in your quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can tile or stone survive outside through a Canadian winter?
Some can. Porcelain soaks up very little water, so it usually handles freeze and thaw better than ordinary ceramic or soft stone. Check that the maker rates it for exterior use where it freezes. The base matters just as much, because water sitting under a tile turns to ice and pops it loose. Ask the installer how the surface sheds water and where the melt goes.
Can tile go over an electric floor heating mat?
Yes. In Ontario, the tile setter can lay the mat, but a notification has to be filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, and the mat must be inspected before it's covered. If you hire someone for the wiring from the panel, it has to be a licensed electrical contractor. Make sure the floor sensor goes in, since ESA has warned about floors overheating when it was left out.
Does a tile installer in Quebec need a licence?
Generally, yes, for paid work on your home. Quebec's Régie du bâtiment licenses construction contractors, and non-structural masonry, marble and ceramics has its own subclass. Look up the business on the RBQ's online register and match it to the name on your quote. The licence number belongs on the estimate, the contract and the invoice, so a quote without one deserves a question.
Does the stone need sealing?
Natural stone does, engineered quartz doesn't. Granite, marble and limestone soak up oil and wine, and a sealer gives you time to wipe before a stain sets. Outdoors, the job gets harder. De-icing salt carried in on boots, or spread on a stone step, can mark and wear the surface, so seal outdoor stone and sweep salt off rather than letting it sit.
Can tile go straight onto a basement concrete floor?
Sometimes, but check the slab first. Basement floors often carry moisture up from the ground and have shrinkage cracks that will telegraph through grout. A good installer tests for moisture, and over cracks or damp slabs uses a membrane that lets the tile move apart from the concrete. Ask about a heating mat at the same time, since concrete below grade stays cold underfoot.
