Quand élaguer en urgence ? En cas de coup de vent, les branches mortes tombent en premier, d’où l’intérêt de les surveiller régulièrement et de les élaguer. En hiver, les persistants (cèdre, pin, magnolia) offrent plus de prise au vent, surtout dans des zones exposées aux bourrasques (bord de mer, sommet de colline). Ils sont naturellement plus vulnérables que les feuillus, dénudés à cette saison. Parmi les feuillus, les champions de vitesse de la croissance en hauteur fabriquent du bois moins résistant : robinier, saule, frêne, févier d’Amérique, ailante, eucalyptus... à l’inverse du chêne, du charme, des arbres fruitiers, du buis. Les arbres sont fragilisés par des élagages sévères (étêtage, coupe de grosses sections), qui favorisent le développement rapide de branches mal ancrées sous l’écorce. Une branche ayant poussé naturellement est insérée jusqu’au milieu du tronc.
