Overview: Tree Trimming & Pruning Services
Tree crews here spend a lot of the year getting ahead of ice. Snow load and freezing rain find every weak fork and every limb hanging over the roof, so clearance pruning and a thinned crown do their work before the storm, not after it. A good cut sits just outside the branch collar, where the tree can seal over it.
Late winter is prime time for most shade trees. The tree is dormant, the structure is easy to see, and frozen ground keeps the truck from rutting the lawn. Species matters, though, so ask the crew why they want to cut now.
Not every tree near your house is yours to prune. In Toronto, a tree growing mostly on the city's side of the property line belongs to the city, and even light pruning on it needs city permission. Wires belong to the utility, and they come with their own rules.
Our listings show what each tree company says on its own website, along with its hours and public reviews. Use the province and city lists to find crews working near you.
What tree care costs in Canada
Price the intended work on each tree. Pruning scope, access and cleanup matter more than a generic hourly crew rate.

What changes the price
- Tree or hedge size and the precise pruning objective
- Climbing, lift access, nearby structures and utilities
- Disposal scope, several trees in one visit and follow-up work
Ask before accepting a quote
- Which branches or crown operations are included, and can you price from photos showing height, crown width and access?
- Does the total include branch chipping, haul-away and the minimum visit charge?
- Can several trees or the hedge be included in one visit, with each task and cleanup allowance itemized?
Buy a defined tree-care result
- Compare the same pruning objective rather than an unspecified amount of time
- Ask whether planted trees or support systems require separately billed follow-up visits
Canadian context
Local tree-protection rules and utility ownership can affect the work; confirm authorization before arranging work near protected trees or lines.
Planning amounts in Canadian dollars. Published tax treatment varies; confirm applicable taxes and the final total in your written quote. Rows can be different services, alternative packages or separately priced extras. Add only work that is needed and not already included in your quote.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a city permit to take a tree down?
Depending on your city, you might. Toronto requires a permit to remove or injure a private tree above a set trunk size, and it usually asks for new trees to be planted as a condition. Normal pruning done to good arborist practice doesn't need one there. Dead or dangerous trees go through a separate process. Check your own city's bylaw before the crew arrives.
Why is topping a tree a bad idea?
Topping cuts the trunk and main limbs back to stubs the tree can't seal, and decay moves in from every one. The new shoots grow fast but hang on to the outer wood only. Ice is exactly the load they can't carry, so a topped tree tends to shed limbs in the first freezing rain. A proper reduction cuts back to a living side branch instead.
When is the right time of year to prune?
Late winter suits most shade trees, while spring bloomers wait until their flowers drop. Oaks are the big exception. The CFIA asks people not to prune oaks between April and November, because fresh cuts attract the beetles that can carry oak wilt. Broken or hanging limbs are a safety job in any season.
Who cuts branches growing into power lines?
Call the utility first. In Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority says not to prune near power lines yourself, and to call your local utility or a certified utility arborist. Hydro One customers can book a free disconnect and reconnect so a crew can work near their own service line. In Quebec, the law lets only arborists authorized by Hydro-Québec work close to its wires.
What happens to the branches and wood chips?
Brush usually goes through the chipper on site, and many crews will leave the chips for mulch if you ask. Put hauling in the written quote, since it's real labour. Firewood comes with a federal rule. The CFIA bars moving firewood of any species out of an area regulated for emerald ash borer without its permission. Burn it close to home, not at the cottage.
