How to Remove Common Carpet Stains Carpet stains are inevitable, but with the right techniques and cleaning solutions, you can easily remove them. Here are three simple steps to follow for general carpet stain removal: Remove excess solids or liquids immediately with a spoon or butter knife and a clean, white cloth. Apply a carpet stain remover or DIY solution, such as a vinegar solution (1 tsp. mild dishwashing liquid, 1 quart warm water, ¼ tsp. white vinegar). Blot the stain with a clean, white cloth, working from the outside in. Repeat until the stain is gone. Here are tips for removing specific common stains: Blood: Use cold water or club soda and blot with a clean cloth. Candle wax: Hardens with an ice pack, then vacuum up the pieces. Chocolate: Scrape off excess, then apply a dish soap and water solution. Coffee or tea: Mix 2 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide and 1 tbsp. dish soap, then blot and rinse. Dirt: Let dry, then vacuum and apply a detergent solution. Fat-based stains: Use baking soda and rubbing alcohol. Gum: Freeze with an ice pack, then chip away and vacuum. Pet urine: Blot up liquid, then apply an enzymatic cleaner. Wine or juice: Spritz with club soda and blot with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner. Replace carpet if stains are unremovable, there is noticeable wear and tear, or if there is water damage or persistent smells.
