This was a heavily worn walnut floor that desperately needed to be refinished in Dunbar, Vancouver. Children and pets took a toll on this one over the course of 10 years or so. Walnut is a prized wood amongst woodworkers but not very well known in the general public, probably due to it's high cost. It is naturally brown in colour, and does not need to be stained. Over time, it will become lighter, especially with sun exposure. It's also one of the softer hardwoods. Sanding walnut floors requires extra attention, especially in the final stages. Because it's so soft, it can easily be dished out by unexperienced floor refinishers. I use a very heavy plate sander once I've finished sanding off with my drum, to ensure the floor is tabletop flat and smooth. I prefer using oil based finishes for walnut, cherry, jatoba, and other exotic woods. It really brings out the colour and the grain reflects in a way unlike water based finishes, which tend to be milky and flatter looking (a great look on oak, birch, and maple hardwood floors).
