Overview: Pest Control Services
Pest control in a Canadian house often means mice that move in with the first frost, carpenter ants in damp wood, wasps under the eaves, bed bugs that came home in a suitcase, and the odd raccoon in the attic. Spraying is the small part. The real work is finding how the pest gets in and what keeps it fed.
Pesticide licensing is provincial. In Ontario, the person applying pesticides at your house needs an exterminator licence, and the business needs an operator licence. Quebec gives the company a permit and each technician a certificate. BC certifies applicators and licenses the businesses that employ them. Ask for the numbers and check them.
The strongest poisons are out of a homeowner's reach, and some are out of a pro's reach too. Health Canada limits commercial rodent baits to certified pros, farmers and approved programs. In BC, the strongest anticoagulant rat poisons can't be used at private homes at all. Expect traps, sealing and locked bait stations instead of a miracle product.
Our listings show what each company states on its own website, including the pests it treats and whether it handles wildlife. Pick your province, then your city, to reach pest control experts who cover your neighbourhood.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check that a pest control company is licensed?
Ask for the licence details, then check them with the province. Ontario shows pesticide operator licences in its online Access Environment search. Quebec keeps a public pesticide registry where you can confirm the company's extermination permit and the technician's certificate. In BC, the business needs a pesticide licence and the person applying product needs a certificate. A company that won't share its numbers has told you enough.
Why can't I buy the strong rat poison the pros use?
Health Canada keeps commercial rodent baits for certified pest control operators, farmers and approved programs. Anticoagulant baits sold to homeowners come in solid forms like wax blocks, and any poison bait has to sit in a tamper-proof station where kids or pets could reach it. BC goes further: the most toxic anticoagulants can't be used at private homes, even by a licensed company. Snap traps and sealed gaps do most of the work anyway.
Can a company trap the raccoon in my attic and move it?
In Ontario, it can trap it, but it can't drive it out to the country. Provincial rules say captured wildlife gets released close to where it was caught, and quickly, so it keeps its known food and shelter. Acting for you, a wildlife removal business may capture and release, not kill. The job works when the entry hole gets sealed, so ask who closes it and when.
Do I need a termite inspection when buying a house?
Where termites live, yes. In Canada, subterranean termites are a regional pest in parts of southern Ontario, BC and Manitoba, and Toronto has dealt with them for a long time. Across most of the country, the wood-destroying insects you'll meet are carpenter ants. Either way, get a written report and read what it says about wood touching soil, since breaking that contact is the main defence.
Is treatment safe with children and pets?
It can be, when the product and placement are right. Every pesticide registered in Canada carries a Health Canada label with a registration number, and that label is the legal rulebook. Ask to see it. Ask how long to stay off treated areas, and keep kids and pets away until surfaces dry. Closed bait stations and crack treatments expose a household far less than spraying open floors.
How do I prepare the house before treatment?
Follow the prep sheet, because a skipped step can waste the visit. For bed bugs, Quebec's government calls a hot dryer cycle the most effective way to kill them in fabric, and says to bag clean items and clear the rooms. Don't spray store insecticide first. Quebec warns it can hurt your health and make bed bugs harder to kill. For cockroaches, empty the cupboards and degrease.
