Il est reconnu que les fondations en blocs de béton sont de moindre qualité puisqu’elles sont sensibles aux poussées latérales du sol. La raison en est que ces fondations sont composées d’unités en blocs de béton contenant du mortier (entre ces mêmes blocs). Les murs en blocs de béton sont très faibles et résistent mal aux forces latérales, car ils perdent facilement leur intégrité structurale. De plus, les blocs peuvent se déplacer et bouger de façon indépendante. Alors, il ne faut pas installer des murs en blocs de béton lorsqu’il y a des forces latérales importantes, venant d’un niveau élevé du sol, ou une pression hydrostatique importante devant les murs de fondations. Les forces latérales élevées causent des dommages aux murs en blocs de béton. Ainsi, les murs peuvent s’incliner et fissurer et des blocs peuvent se déplacer à un tel point que les murs perdent leur intégrité structurale et deviennent hors plomb. Dans le cas où l’on fait le choix d’installer des murs en blocs de béton, il faut donc armer ces murs et remplir les rangées d’alvéoles, avec du béton, pour que ces murs puissent résister aux charges latérales y appliquées.
