The first mass timber boutique hotel in North America, Hotel Magdalena honours the history of heavy timber construction in Austin's South Congress neighborhood. #flybackfridaynnDesigned by Lake|Flato Architects and completed in 2020, the Hotel consists of three timber buildings: a 4-, 3-, and 2-storey. The primary structure for the interior hotel rooms is dowel laminated timber panels on light wood frame bearing/shear walls, exposed at the ceiling and creating a warm and welcoming aesthetic in the rooms.nnOur structural engineers came up with an exterior exposed walkway structure which is composed of gapped timber panels on Glulam substructure – the wood is exposed on both sides (floor and ceiling). The system was appropriately gapped to minimize the noise of suitcases rolling, and to allow proper drainage.
