Clogs are common in kitchen sinks. With lots of food debris slipping down the drain when rinsing dishes, washing food, cleaning coffee filters, etc, it's not unusual for the drain to back up from time to time. Thankfully there's a fairly straightforward DYI you can do to help keep your drain clear- cleaning out the P-trap. Drain Cleaners   Many homeowners lean towards a drain cleaner to help clear a clog, but be aware that most of these cleaners contain corrosive chemicals which can damage plumbing. A natural solution that's much gentler is a mixture of hot water, baking soda and white vinegar.  P-Trap   Sink's are designed with a P-trap underneath, which holds water so that sewer gases don't come out of the drain. It's called a P-trap because of its shape. It connects the sink drain pipe to with a horizontal overflow pipe forming the shape of the letter “P”. Because of its shape, it can accumulate a build up of debris over time, causing the drain to slow or clog. Cleaning Steps - Clear anything under the sink to allow access to the p-trap - Place a bucket underneath the plumbing to catch any runoff - Remove the two coupling nuts that connect the trap to the drain pipe  - Clean the inside of the trap using a bottle brush or similar tool - Put the trap back on - Make sure the washers are positioned properly and tighten the coupling nuts - Run the faucet for a minute while observing the p-trap to ensure there aren't any leaks...
