The free estimate promises less on a multi-trade job, and it is advertised by 17 of the 24 companies here. Free normally buys a walk-through and a ballpark figure. A real price takes measuring, trade pricing and desk time, so design-build firms often charge for that stage and credit it against the work if you sign.
