A heat pump is a heating and cooling system. It consists of an evaporator, a condenser, a four-way valve, reversing valve and a coax compressor. In cooling mode, hot gas is discharged from the compressor and moved to the coax condenser where the water removes the heat and turns the hot gas into liquid. This liquid then moves from the condenser into the DX valve where it is vaporized and goes into the evaporator coil, providing cold gas. Once it comes out, it goes back into the compressor and the cycle repeats itself. In heating mode, the cycle becomes reversed. The condenser acts as the evaporator and the evaporator acts as a condenser. Therefore, in cooling mode you generate hot water and in heating mode you generate cold water. The water takes away the heat from the occupied space and at the same time takes heat away from the compressor. In a heat pump, the refrigerant line is a carrier. It takes heat from water site to air site, working as a catalyst. Thus, the refrigerant is a carrier of heat from one location to the next.

A heat pump is a refrigerant compressor heating and cooling based system, whereas a fan coil is a hydronic heating and cooling based system. This means that heat pumps can provide on demand heating and cooling 24/7 while isolated in your suite, but a fan coil has limited heating and cooling abilities based on having 4-pipe or 2-pipe.
